What is a Domain Name?

Also known as Internet Address or Username. A domain name is your web site address ie: www.yourname.co.uk or .com etc. Once your domain name is registered you can allocate e-mail addresses and book web space.

What is a URL?

URL is short for Uniform Resource Locator. More usually called an web address, it defines a location on the Internet. For example, the URL for Edgedata? is http://www.edgedata.co.uk - you just type it into your Internet browsers address bar to connect to and view this site.

What is E-mail?

E-mail is electronic mail - like ordinary mail but sent from one computer to another. E-mail can be viewed on a computer screen or printed out.

What is a Home Page?

A home page is the opening page of a web site that gives you an overview of the whole site. There is usually a link back to the Home Page from anywhere within the web site.

What is a Web Site?

A web site is a collection of web pages - starting with the Home Page and then leading to a series of other pages containing relevant information and often ending with an Enquiry/Contact Page.

What is a Modem?

A modem is the device that turns the computer's digital signals into sound so that it can be transferred over the phone line. That phone line could be a standard telephone line, ISDN or ADSL digital line or in some cases leased lines. A modem will often contain a device called a router which can distribute the internet service to interconnected computers on a network.

What is an Attachment?

An attachment is a file (image or text) that you can attach to an e-mail message. Always be care full when receiving attachments from unknown sources as these can contain viruses and other threats.

What is a Browser?

A browser is a software program used to view information on the Internet. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera and Netscape are the commonly used for browsers.

What is an Internet Service Provider?

An ISP (Internet Service Provider) is the company that sells you access to the Internet. (ie: BT, Cable & many others). An ISP also gives you an e-mail address.

What is a Search Engine?

search engine is a free service (ie. Google, Yahoo, Ask Geeves, Hotbot, Alta Vista, Lycos, Infoseek etc...) that helps you to find information by typing in a word (keyword) or a combination of words or a phrase which will then retrieve web-sites that apply to the criteria you are looking for.

What is E-commerce?

E-commerce is electronic commerce. The most common form of this are sites which have a shopping basket system, where the visitor to the site can pick up goods around the site (placing them in a shopping basket) and then proceed to order the goods securely from the web-site.
