site design tips...
A well designed web site can be a stylish shop window through which anyone in the world with an internet connection can learn about your business.
It can:
- Help to form useful business and personal contacts and facilitate dialogue with people working in the same field.
- Speed the announcement of a new product or service to a worldwide audience.
- Provide an on-line catalogue and price list which can be updated in hours rather than weeks.
- Save advertising, promotion and distribution costs.
- Enhance a company's image.
Simplicity...
Your audience on the web has the attention span of a five year old!
If they can't view your site quickly, and navigate around it easily, they'll soon get frustrated. Don't make them give up and go to your rival's site.
Wired for sound...
The use of sound also comes with a warning, and embedded sound is becoming another no-no on the Web. It slows download times and adds little to the browser's Web experience.
Plug me in...
Be careful not to limit the number of people that can view your site. Making a site dependent on particular plug-ins reduces its appeal. If visitors don't have the required plugin, they'll need to download it from another site, but they might not come back!
Men at work...
If a site isn't finished, don't post it on the web. All good sites are under construction behind the scenes.
Thumbs up...
If you have to put large images on your web site, use thumbnails (small versions of your graphics) so your visitors don't have to waste their phone bills downloading large images that they didn't want to see.
Heard of the three click rule? For smaller sites, no piece of information should be more than three clicks away from your Home page. If you have a large site, use icons and toolbars to improve navigation.
Space-aged...
Think about space. Don't try to pack your pages with images, text and unnecessary animated GIF's. The web's a cluttered place. If you have plenty of space on your pages, the design will really stand out.
Size matters...
Don't use graphics that span the whole width of the screen. Your visitors will have to scroll to the right to see them - 75% of the screen width is a good measurement.
Hide and seek...
The chances of anyone finding your site is small unless you get listed with the main search engines. Promotion is vital.
White space...
Use white space to attract attention. Too much notice is drawn to something by making it flash, blink, spin or pirouette. Surrounding it with plenty of white space can attract far more attention.
Blunders...
You should stick to regular fonts if you want your site to be taken seriously.
